A rose is a rose is a rose ... what do you do with extra heads?
I am making a garden with mine. If I have a good head that I'm not using for a doll I frame it with silk flower petals. Then I hang them on the wall.
I suppose I could eventually put them on dowels and put them into a flower pot - I think that would look great. With this last flower I discovered a great way to add the hanger. The flower had so much hot glue on it that I had to use my heat gun to melt it to take the petals apart.
I couldn't get the very bottom unglued though but I was able to remove the stem. What I had left was a round plastic disk with a hole in the middle that was attached to a couple of leaves and petals.
The hole allowed me to put my hanger (a braided piece of embroidery thread) through it and then I attached the whole piece to the doll's head.
:> Reminds me of a friend who collected those ugly cabbage patch kids--she ripped their heads off and planted them all outside for, what else, a cabbage patch, complete with ugly baby doll!
Posted by: arlee at March 11, 2005 3:30 PM It's great to practice making body parts by, well , making a bunch. But what to do with them. To me they're, like, unfinished dolls!
So I spent some time thinking about it as I'm not the type of person to just leave them in a box or lying around.
Some ideas I came up with are: make a funny summer purse using a head. The dress is the purse part. use arms, hands, legs and feet on it too.
Another idea is to make a hat for yourself using any kind of body parts - a whole bunch of hands or feet for eg.
And for that matter, a vest, a jacket or coat, jazz up some gloves or mittens, a wall hanging, a funny quilt , around the top of a basket or bag or other functional object.
Actually the ideas are endless, if you think about it!
Today as I'm exploring links I found a lady who has great uses for extra doll practice faces! Her page is www.picturetrail.com/homePage/ladylake
Click on " view my photos ".
Look under" Faerytail Challenage" , " one of a kind sculpures ( Fabric Art) ", and " Beads, clay and lewellery ".
She attaches several stocking needle sculpted faces to her doll creations and uses faces in a couple of her bacelettes that are of clay but could be cloth!
Well worth checking out!
I am new to this making faces...and I grew up with not wasting anything. My doll practice heads go to my dear friend who is an art therapist. She sends me photos of the finished project! She loves saying "I just happen to have a head laying around here somewhere." Il ove that the heads all find happy homes and I haven't wasted anything.
