So - I have made two sets of legs now and they both lean forward at a distinct angle. I have sewn one from the lengthwise grain and one from the crosswise grain. I'm not sure why they are doing this. Any ideas? I don't really want to make this a ski-jumping doll. Oh - and laughing at the very, very fat foot is okay, the doll was retaining water. I stuffed it so hard the darn thing split. VBG.
I have had this happen before when I was drawing up a design and I think it has to do with how the leg connects to the foot, it is hard for me to explain, if either are drawn on an angle than this is gonna happen. Hopefully someone will come across better then me (:

Could be the way the pattern was designed. You could put a wire in the legs and when stuffing them straighten them. Wire helps.
:-)
I'd say that it looks like your pattern piece needs to be adjusted. The only other thing I can think of is to ladder stitch behind the knees until you've brought the upper leg back a bit. I like the fat feet ... they're cute.
Posted by: Lemon Tree Tami at March 23, 2009 6:19 PMLove the feet! Perhaps (just perhaps) your doll is telling you something? That it WANTS legs that look like this?? Sometimes they have a mind of their own and get quite insistent that they have their own way. Just a thought!
Posted by: Mary Anne at March 23, 2009 7:27 PMPerhaps its the way you have drawn the leg.
It I dig deep into my memory gosh that hurts! I remember from what Judi Ward taught us that the foot has to be drawn with a downward angle and because your foot is quite chubby it may need to be drawn at quite a wide angle from the front of the ankle hope I am making sense. Thats the only thing I can think of but I am sure there must be another good reason and our experienced sisters will be able to point it out.
I had the EXACT same problem! Made two sets of legs, and still.... I went ahead with the second set, which only leaned a little less after I did the needle sculpting of the ankles that is recommended. I seriously thought of taking a couple stitches at the back of the knee, but had to get it done. My first set of feet were Fred Flintstone like, too.
Posted by: Sue K at March 24, 2009 4:22 AMoh, yeh...love it. Lots of legs...all different no matter how I try. That's what I've been getting with the doll I'm making right now. Some on the grain..some not...and even the two at exactly the same angle on the same piece of fabric...still have a slight difference in the "lean" (although only the lean of the lower leg as they are bent leg design)....but, I did note that the stitching behind my knee was a teeeeensy bit more rounded on one than the other and it made all the difference in the world! Weird how only one or two stitches can make a huge difference.
Ask to see the original pattern maker's doll in a pic from the side? maybe hers is the same... ... attach the body to them at an angle that will offset and it will probably stand on it's own?
Hi Judy, Not sure what to suggest about the leg. Maybe the fabric just gravitated to that position with the tension of stuffing the foot that hard????? If the picture for the doll, shows the legs straight up, then all I can think of is the stuffing.. Could you feed some wire through leg and foot and force the leg to straighten out??? It would mean un-stuffing it, but that might help. Love the fabric by the way. I would love to get some of that harlequin print, can you direct me to the source???? Thanks, Romona
Posted by: Romona at March 24, 2009 3:47 PMI agree with Mary Anne. With this style of foot (sewn across the toes), the angle of the foot to the leg has to be changed.
You may have drawn the pattern with the foot at a 90 degree angle to the leg - which one would think would work, but doesn't.
Try redrawing the pattern so the angle is more like the hands of a clock at 7:30 or 8.

hi judi... this happened to me also when i took a doll workshop .. after making the original legs 3x i finally redrew them using a "L" shaped ruler (i placed the pattern so that the "I" was centered in the thigh/leg and"_" centered in the foot) it worked like a charm.. legs came out perfect and stood on their own
