Mermaids and polymer

I put a couple of my mermaids up for sale in my Etsy shop. I have a whole school of them here and it's time to move a couple out. I am now working on my polymer clay necklace from the Christi Friesen class over at Doll Street. I'm a polymer novice but it seems to be coming out okay - Christi's instructions are easy to follow. I'll post an in-progress pic when it starts to look like something, LOL.

Oh - I went to knitting class last night and did my gauge swatch. Everything I read about continental knitting said that it is usually looser than throwing so you have to go down a couple of needle sizes. When I bought my needles I bought the sizes it called for plus 2 sizes down. So what do I do? I knit too tight and need the next size UP! Which, of course, I don't have. Sigh. If it's not one thing it's another with me!

A northern mermaid surfaces

I finished up a new northern mermaid today. Her name is Seku and she wants to be a cheerleader when she grows up. She already has the pom poms - or so it seems. I went a bit overboard with the cuffs. She certainly has the look of a pouty teenager, LOL.

Have I mentioned that these mermaids are very hard to photograph. You can barely see it but her tail is gold lame - this was not fun to work with at all! I found some black silver stretch lame for 70% off at JoAnn Fabrics last week - so I'll be trying that next.

Her fur is Arctic Fox. I have a whole bunch of fox and wolf faces - I got them from someone who made hats and these are the leftovers. It's perfect for little projects like this - I can cut small pieces from the sides. It might creep some people out but I'm used to it.

Ornie's available now

I spent most of the day taking photographs of my domino necklaces and the ornaments that didn't sell at the bazaar last weekend. They are now up at my Etsy shop if you are interested. Here's a close up of the blue baby ... she's marked down to $35.00 now. (SOLD)

Photos of the doll show

I took some photos of the doll show today. I still have to go back and take more. Some didn't come out and my camera can't hold that many photos when I take high resolution shots anyway. You can see some of the dolls here.

Another strange doll

I stopped in at the little craft store in North Pole today and rooted around in their 60% off bin. Found this beat up green floral foam topiary for $1.80. Took it home and hours later this appeared ...

I'm getting really strange, aren't I? But it was fun. I collaged over the foam - the bottom is mulberry papers and the top is tissue paper - it's actually got some ancient Egyptian figures on it. She's got plastic doll parts from those inexpensive dolls you get at the craft store. I kind of finger painted her face - that's why she's blotchy, LOL. Her leaves and wires are from a Xmas tree topper. It's a very altered doll! It's a little tipsy but I'm afraid to try to balance it right now. Maybe tomorrow. I can't keep this so I will be selling it. Make me an offer ....

Dasselrond needs a new home

I need to make room for new dolls! So I thought I'd mention one that I'd like to find a new home for. This is Dasselrond - he's a dragon from a Smallworks Pattern. Dasselrond is a pretty amazing piece. Three of us got together and worked on those dragons because they were fairly complicated. . His horns, ears, and spine fins are purple panne velvet, his belly and wings are batiks, the rest of his body is a purple/blue/gold print. He has glass alligator eyes, lots of picot beading along his wings, beading along both sides of his spine fins, and a mohair mane. The bottom half of his tail is stuffed with sand to help him balance. He's jointed, so he is fully poseable, but his wings are pretty heavy due to the beading I did so they don't go all the way up now. I got out the measuring tape to get Dasselrond's particulars and he got rather snooty with me. But I persevered, told him that I was measuring him for a new golden jacket. He settled down after that and I found out that he is 30" long from snout to tail, about 12" high, and has a wingspan of about 26". Those purple dragons think they are the cat's meow. He's one of the best pieces I've made yet!
