Button washing day

A few months ago I bought a huge bag of vintage buttons. Enough buttons to fill a 40oz peanut butter jar. The buttons were soooo dirty that I hated to touch them. I spent a couple of hours over the last couple of days cutting off the fabric and threads that were left on some of the buttons and today I washed them. Which was an interesting project all in itself. Some of the mother of pearl buttons are tiny and I couldn't just wash them in the sink - they would go down the drain. So I ended up sewing a really huge tube out of cheesecloth - put the buttons in it and then soaked them in the sink. Then to really clean them I put them in the dishwasher in a special basket that holds utensils. Worked well - now they just have to dry.

Wooooooo-eeeeee! I am a button NUT! It's my grandmother's fault! She got me started loving buttons when I was 8 years old, and I've had a love affair with them ever since! These are terrific! And sqeaky clean, too! LOL!

Oh I love buttons. I always wash the old ones too. I have found that oxiclean does a great job. And I use a colander to wash them in. LIke your idea of the cheese cloth tube. I may just do that next time.

I had to wash a lot of buttons I bought, too. Like Auntie Linda, I did them in a colander, in a sink full of dawn dishwashing liquid. It was actually a lot of fun, picking and sorting through them aferward. Mine were dirty and off-smelling, so the trimming and sorting had to wait!
