Hats are hits!

December 27, 2012

I think they liked their hats! Made it all worth it!

Hats! Hats! Hats!
Hats! Hats! Hats!
Hats! Hats! Hats!

Fabric matters!

December 16, 2012

As I mentioned earlier, I am sewing again. I purposely left my sewing table accessible when I packed up my studio. I had to set up an ironing/cutting station on top of a dresser in another room but it works (except for when I forgot to move the cutting mat and ironed on top of it – warped it and ruined it!). Anyhow, what I wanted to mention today is pretty obvious. Fabric matters. Or rather, thread count. I am working on some mermaids and I wanted them to have black gloves (yes, my mermaids are cold blooded). I used some black fabric that was in my scrap bucket and it frayed, it wrinkled, it puckered, and the fingers blew out. It was an old sheet. Tsk tsk, I knew better. So to make myself feel better I made hands out of a knit. This is some old doesuede. I should have changed from a Sharps needle to a Universal (or rounded point) needle but it wasn’t too bad to sew. It was hell to turn though as the fuzzy side was inside. Once I got them turned they looked so nice that it was all worth it. So moral of the story? Don’t skimp on the thread count, use a good fabric and make your life easier!

More hats

December 14, 2012

So I got all the hats done, yay! I have put the crochet hook away for a while and am now back to sewing. The studio isn’t done yet, darn it all! The saleswoman didn’t order the right length of vinyl so she had to order new. Should get it installed on the 22nd – the weekend before Christmas. It’s been tough with so much disarray in the house – no holiday spirit for me – and no decorations because I still have all my bedroom furniture in the living room!

But back to the hats … the dino hat is for my 5 yr old grandson, his favorite color is green. This is green, lol. Very green. The hat is crocheted and the teal spikes are knitted (and stuffed). Maybe a bit too stuffed. I think he’ll like it.

Finally there are two more owl hats – and they aren’t angry birds either. One is for my 4 yr old grandson and one is for my 8 yr old niece. They were fun to make and the pattern was free on Ravelry. My nieces hat has ‘ears’ or whatever you call them. Crocheting hats sure is faster than knitting them and now I have a big stash of {gasp} Red Heart yarn. Don’t tell my snobby knitting buds!
